Jalen Tolbert, WR – 2022 NFL Draft Report
Prospect: Jalen Tolbert
School: South Alabama Jaquars
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 190 lbs
40 time: 4.43 (estimated)
Jalen Tolbert Strengths
-Height and speed combination
-Deep threat with YAC ability
There’s a lot to like when it comes to South Alabama wide reciever Jalen Tolbert. Standing at 6’3″ he’s got the height that you love to see lining up outside. Consider his estimated 4.4 speed and you get excited about the potential deep threat. Then you watch him play and see that’s he strong. He has the ability to block out defenders on contested passes as well as break tackles in the open field. Tolbert is a smooth route runner, with great footwork and has no issues getting off the line of scrimmage.
Jalen Tolbert Weaknesses
-Has tendacy to drop catchable pass
-Run blocking needs improvement
I do see room for improvement when it comes to his run blocking though. In most cases he more just runs and gets in front of the defender more than blocks. When called into action to actually block, like on quick screens, he tends to struggle holding it long enough for the play to develop. Also, I would like to see him reduce the number of catchable passes that he fails to hold on to. I’m not going as far as saying he has a drop issue. But it’s something that prevents him from being listed with the best of the 2022 NFL Draft class for wide receivers.
Draft Thoughts
After putting up back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons, Tolbert has to firmly be on most (if not all) NFL team’s draft boards. This goes for me as well. I don’t think Tolbert hears his name called Day 1. I don’t think he’s quite in the class of say, a Treylon Burks. Rather, much like NFL Mock Draft Database, I project him as a Day 2 pick. I could see Jalen hearing his name called in the late 2nd or early 3rd round. Tolbert recently accepted an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl. So he’ll have a chance to improve his draft stock against some of the best talent in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.
