Marcus Jones, CB – 2022 NFL Draft Report
Prospect: Marcus Jones
School: Houston Cougars
Height: 5’8″
Weight: 185 lbs
40 time: TBD
Marcus Jones Strengths
-Athleticism
-Versatility
When you watch Marcus Jones play, there’s no question what a great athlete he is. He shows great vision and balance with his return ability. On defense he can run with any receiver. He has nice fluid hips, and has no issues with transitioning from his backpedal to sprinting with the receiver. He’s a threat to take any ball that he gets his hands on back for a touchdown. It doesn’t matter if that’s on special teams or defense. And that’s another great part about Jones’ game; his versatility. He’ll immediately help improve any NFL team’s special team unit. On defense he can play inside or outside. He even looks comfortable in both zone and man coverage as well.
Marcus Jones Weaknesses
-Undersized
-Struggles with deeper throws
At 5’8″ Marcus is going to give up a few inches to most NFL receivers. It doesn’t help that he seems to struggle on deeper thrown jump balls. I don’t know if this has to do with the size, or if he has trouble tracking the ball in the air. This wasn’t a once in a blue moon occurance either. Every game I watched, it happened at least once where he was beaten in this manner.
Draft Thoughts
Marcus Jones is an interesting draft prospect. This is simply because he brings more to the table than others. But if it wasn’t for his returning skills, I think he’d be a later Day 3 pick. As a cornerback, he’s good but not great. Jones’ real value will be what he’ll bring to a team on special teams. Because of this, I could see him potentially sneaking into the 3rd round. Jones did recently accept an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl, along with his teammate Logan Hall. So he’ll have a chance to improve his draft stock versus some of the best QB’s and WR’s in this year’s NFL Draft.
